The Salt Lake Tribune recently profiled a new Deseret Industries store recently built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sugar House, a neighborhood in Salt Lake City. We provided information about the dedication and opening of the store in June.

As the Tribune article explained, “The new facility is not just a thrift store that provides donated items at low cost, but also a training facility where workers are taught various skills that will help them find steady jobs.”

Deseret Industries is a nonprofit, vocational rehabilitation facility and a thrift store. The Church operates 46 such stores in seven western states (see providentliving.org for more details).

Deseret Industries is composed of three related parts. First, trainees work, receive training and find long-term employment. Second, the public may purchase inexpensive, quality merchandise in a clean, safe retail environment. To those in need, merchandise is provided at no cost. Third, all people may provide meaningful service through the donation of time and merchandise.
