Plans to construct the temple were announced 14 October 1998, Church leaders broke ground 8 May 1999, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Baton Rouge Louisiana Temple 16 July 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Louisiana and Mississippi.

The exterior of the 10,700-square-foot temple is Imperial Danby white marble.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
