Search Tips

All terms entered affect the search results.  In nearly all cases, no words are skipped, even common articles like “a” or “of.”

Punctuation and special characters are not ignored and affect search results, other than those used for advanced search.  Select your search terms carefully.

All searches are case insensitive unless quotation marks are used.  For example, a search for Joseph Smith will return the same results as joseph smith, however “Joseph Smith” and “joseph smith” are different.

Entering a phrase in quotation marks will also return exact matches.  The shorter the phrase, the more results will be returned.

Searching with ‘or’ will return all results with the terms separated by the ‘or.’  A search for ‘hurricane or flood’ will return matches of both words.  Using ‘and’ in place of ‘or’ will return results where both terms appear together.

Find-as-you-type features results that match your query as you enter it and provide a quick link to specific matches.

Results Display

If you misspell a term, the system will return matching results for the misspelling as well as suggested corrections.  For example, a search for ‘Chuch’ will return results for ‘Church’ for your convenience.

As an additional help, your search term(s) are highlighted in the title and summary shown in the search results.

Synonyms and related keywords are available in a drop-down menu at the top of the search results for many common search terms.

Filters and facets are available as links on the right hand side of the search results page to help you better refine your search and filter results.

Watch for featured topic page links in the upper right-hand side of the search results page.  These are links to our topic pages that are dedicated to terms that closely match your search results.  For example, a search for ‘Book of Mormon’ will return topic page links that offer more in-depth information on the Book of Mormon, the languages it is translated into, and the history of the Church.
