In a Washington Post opinion piece about social mobility in the United States, columnist Fareed Zakaria says “cities with strong families, civic support groups and a community-service orientation do well on social and economic mobility.” He notes that this is “why Salt Lake City — dominated by Mormons — has mobility levels that compare with” countries in northern Europe that “do better at moving poor people up the ladder than the United States does."

As part of Pacific Partnership 2012 (a four-month long U.S. Pacific Fleet humanitarian and civic assistance project that ended on 11 August), the Church donated medical supplies and hygiene, injury and school kits to help the Cambodia Children’s Fund Rescue Center. In this video U.S. Navy video, the president of the Church’s Cambodia Phnom Penh Mission describes the ceremony that marked the arrival of the donations.

Like many other Utahns, we recall fondly the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Clearly the games were a community effort made possible in large part by the thousands of volunteers that lent their time and talents to welcome the many visitors and athletes to our state. It was a thrill to help support these efforts and those of the organizing committee to make the games a success.
