One government leader recently complimented The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' welfare program while issuing a day of service proclamation.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell announced that 24 September 2011 will be his state’s Day of Service, and concluded his proclamation with these words:

2011 marks the 75th anniversary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ welfare program, an effort which has improved the lives of countless individuals in our Commonwealth, these United States, and throughout the world, and which should be a model to all organizations and faiths as we work together to build a true Commonwealth of Opportunity.

At the April 2011 general conference, Church leaders asked members across the world to perform a day of service to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Church’s welfare program.
